UAH Earns Key 2-1 Road Win at Union

JACKSON, Tenn. | An early second-half goal propelled the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team to a 2-1 road win at Union on Sunday afternoon. UAH moves to 4-6-0 (3-3-0 Gulf South Conference) with the victory, while the Lady Bulldogs slip to 2-6-0 (0-4-0 GSC).

The triumph puts the Chargers in a tie for fifth place in the conference with nine points. The top six teams will make the GSC Championships at the end of the regular season.

With the game tied at 1-1, Alexcia Alexander put the Chargers on top as her attempted cross bent towards the goal and in, thanks in part to a strong wind at the Union pitch. The goal in the 57th minute is the seventh of the year for the freshman.

Fellow freshman keeper Larae Breaux then preserved the win just two minutes later as she made a leaping stop to keep UAH in front. Breaux finished the day with six saves, earning her fourth win of the season in goal.

Maddie Maurice opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when a ball from Melody Dodd found Maurice at the top of the box, and she fired it to the lower left corner to give UAH the early 1-0 lead while also providing Maurice with her first points of the season.

Dodd nearly made it a two-goal advantage for the Chargers just three minutes later, but the Union keeper came out and challenged her at the ride sight of the box and made the stop, allowing the hosts to tie the contest in the 43rd minute when Shelby High booted a long, wind-aided attempted just over Breaux's outstretched hands.

UAH held a 16-14 advantage in shots in the contest, while shots on goal were even at 7-7. The Chargers took the only two corners in the contest.

UAH will return to action on Friday night when Shorter visits the Rocket City. Kickoff at Charger Park is slated for 5 p.m.
