TROY, Alabama | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 exhibition slate on Tuesday night, falling 92-56 in a preseason tune-up.
Eight players scored for the Chargers, including four of the team's newcomers, and
Halle Jarnagin led the way for UAH with 18 points on the strength of a 7-for-13 showing from the floor. Jarnagin also was strong on the glass in the game as she grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Jarnagin scored 12 of her points in a strong opening half for the visitors, with the period featuring three ties and seven lead changes.
The contest was tied at 14-14 near the midway point of the half after
Caroline Dodd scored, but Troy outscored the Chargers 30-16 over the remainder of the half to take a 44-30 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Trojans – who were led by Rachel Reid's 26 points – then scored 48 in the second 20 minutes to claim the 92-56 victory.
UAH shot 40.4 percent for the game and was perfect from the charity stripe with a 12-for-12 showing, while the hosts connected on 46.6 percent of their attempts. Neither team shot the 3-ball particularly well with the Chargers hitting going 6-for-23 from downtown while limiting the Trojans to a 21.1 percent mark from long range.
Joining Jarnagin with solid outings in the contest was
Josi Saunders who scored nine and collected a team-best three steals, while
Shannon Steinert dished out a team-high four assists while also scoring five and grabbing six rebounds.
The Chargers will continue the preseason on Monday when the team travels to Middle Tennessee.
