Strong First Half Leads Shorter Past UAH on Thursday

ROME, Ga. | A blistering first-half shooting performance by the home team proved the difference as the University of Alabama in Huntsville travelled to Shorter on Thursday night, falling 78-56. The Chargers slipped to 5-6 (2-3 Gulf South Conference) with the setback, while Shorter improved to 6-5 (2-3 GSC).

Halle Jarnagin once again led the Chargers in scoring, tallying 11 of her 19 points in the first half as she made five shots fall and was 9-for-11 from the charity stripe while adding six rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Dina Saunders and Caroline Dodd who both chipped in with 10.

Juanice Newton was strong on the glass for the Blue and White, grabbing a game-high seven rebounds.

Shorter started off the contest strong, shooting a terrific 64.3 percent from the field while connecting on 8 of its 11 3-point field goal attempts for a 3-point shooting mark of 72.7 percent, and the Hawks held a 50-23 advantage at the halftime break after holding the visitors to a first-half shooting percentage of just 27.3 percent.

UAH grabbed the momentum out of the locker room, going on an 18-7 run over the first 9:36 of the second stanza to narrow the gap to 59-41. Dina Saunders was particularly strong during the stretch, scoring all 10 of her points in the run.

The Chargers could not shrink the deficit further, however, as Shorter finished the game outscoring UAH 19-15 in the remaining minutes.

For the contest, the Hawks outshot the Chargers by a 54.2 percent to 38.1 percent margin as UAH shot a much-improved 50 percent in the second half, and Shorter also held a 31-28 advantage on the glass.

Tamarr Williams led the hosts with 15 points as she was one of four players to score in double figures.

The Chargers will return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Cleveland, Tennessee, for a contest with Lee. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m. CST.
