About the Chargers
-Sunday's season opener will begin the 19th season in program history for UAH softball as the Chargers welcome Young Harris to town for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Â
-The Chargers begin the year with high expectations – an indication of the level of respect the program garners as the team lost seven starters from last year yet still checked in at the top of the GSC Preseason Poll while also ranking No. 9 in the preseason national rankings.
Â
-Sunday marks the first contest of three-time All-American Mary Kelley's senior campaign. A season ago, the Mobile, Ala., native finished in the top five in the GSC in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs, hits, RBI, doubles, triples and stolen bases as she started 60 contests. Kelley finished the season with 71 hits, 62 runs and 55 RBI.
Â
-UAH opens the new season with experience in the circle with preseason all-GSC selections Whitney Toler and Kimberly Jack at the top of this year's staff. Toler has been a key pitching force for three seasons now as she enters her senior year, while Jack returns after snagging both the GSC Pitcher of the Year and GSC Freshman of the Year honors last season.
Â
-Despite losing the seven starters, there is plenty of youth to be excited about including Kaitlyn Bannister, Taylor Doriety and Emily Glover who all earned GSC Top Newcomer status. Bannister was an all-state performer at Albertville High School, Doriety was a star pitcher at Hueytown High School, and Glover was the 5A State Player of the Year a season ago at Scottsboro High School.
About the Opponent
-Young Harris opens the season on Saturday at North Alabama before making the short trek to Huntsville for Sunday's pair of games.

Â
-Sophomore Darby Stanford will lead the pitching staff after having a strong freshman season a year ago in which she won 13 games and registered a 2.74 ERA.
