Toler Terrific as UAH Opens GSC Play with Victory

Box Score CARROLLTON, Ga. | The ninth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team opened up Gulf South Conference play on Saturday afternoon, capturing a 5-1 victory at West Georgia to remain perfect on the year at 8-0 (1-0 GSC). The Wolves slip to 6-3 (0-1 GSC).

Whitney Toler (2-0) was masterful in the circle for UAH, surrendering just two hits and the lone run – an unearned tally. Striking out two, the senior pitcher lowered her season ERA to a miniscule 0.43.

The scoring started for the visitors in the second when Mallory McNeal beat out a throw on a dribbler down the first-base line with two outs that allowed Mary Kelley to score, and the Chargers went up 2-0 later in the frame when Victoria Frith drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Rae Edenfield.

The unearned run in the bottom of the third cut the lead in half, but UAH wasted no time in getting the run back.

The Chargers added to the advantage in the top of the fourth inning when with two outs, Haley Thompson served it into left with Tyler Harrison standing on second, and head coach Les Stuedeman took a risk by sending Harrison home. The throw made it to the plate in plenty of time, but Harrison was excellently evasive and avoided the tag to make it 3-1.

Standing at second after advancing on the throw, Thompson then stole third before scampering home on a wild pitch to put the Chargers up by three at 4-1.

Wrapping up the scoring, Edenfield picked up her fifth RBI of the season in the UAH half of the fifth when she singled in Macie Couey to create the eventual 5-1 final.

Couey finished the contest with two of UAH's eight hits while six other Chargers collected a hit in the game.

The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader that is slated to start at 11 a.m. CST.
