West Georgia Takes Sunday Doubleheader from UAH

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARROLLTON, Ga. | The No. 9 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team dropped its first two games of the year on Sunday, falling 6-4 and 6-5 to host West Georgia in Gulf South Conference play. The Chargers slip to 8-2 (1-2 GSC), while UWG improves to 8-3 (2-1 GSC).

In the contests, senior Mary Kelley established the UAH and GSC record for doubles in career as she had two on the day to now own 66.

UAH will look to bounce back next weekend when it plays its first conference games at home this year when Lee visits. The Saturday doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. with Sunday's single contest beginning at 1 p.m. at Charger Park.

UWG 6, UAH 4

Kelley tied the doubles record in the first inning, allowing her to score later in the frame when Tyler Harrison singled while producing a 1-0 lead for UAH, but the hosts would go in front with a pair of runs in the second. The lead was shortlived for the moment as UAH capitalized on errors in the third to go back in front.

A pair of errors allowed Victoria Frith to be standing at third when Macie Couey tripled to the game at 2-2, and UAH grabbed a 3-2 lead when Couey scored on a groundout by Kelley.

Kelley would picked up another RBI in the fifth when singled in Couey again to make it 4-2, but West Georgia scored a run in the sixth and then in an inning extended by two UAH errors, the Wolves would walk off with a three-run home run by Nicole Yancey.

Emily Glover (3-1) took the setback for the Chargers in the circle.

UWG 6, UAH 5

UAH wasted no time trying to erase any momentum that might have been generated by the walk-off as Couey's second triple of the day drove in Frith and Kelley knocked in Couey to give the Chargers a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Heather Crow would belt a two-run homer in the bottom frame to knot the game up at 2-2.

A dropped fly in the top of the second, however, put the Chargers back in front as Frith scored on the play after singling earlier in the frame, and UAH padded its lead when Kelley picked up the record-breaking in the fifth to score Couey, and a Harrison groundout later in the frame sent Kelley home to make it 5-2.

Responding with a big inning, West Georgia scored four times in the fifth – including another Crow two-run blast – to take the lead, and the hosts retired UAH in order in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.

Taylor Doriety (2-1) picked up the loss in the circle.
