Tennis Suffers Setbacks to West Alabama

HUNTSVILLE | The UAH men's and women's tennis teams suffered a pair of setbacks to West Alabama Wednesday afternoon. The narrow 5-4 loss puts the women at 1-2 on the season while the men fall to 0-2 with the 8-1 decision.

At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Marleen Gort and Aniek Remmerswaal led off the day with an 8-3 victory over Natalia Cardenas and Stanzi Stuijt.

Senior Jessica Groupierre and junior Katie Bryant defeated Christina Bettag and Shannon McEvoy in a tight 8-6 contest to help the Lady Chargers head into singles play with a 2-1 lead.

Gort continued her excellent play with a win over Cardenas 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 in singles. However, UWA would go on to take four of the next matches to capture the victory despite freshman Aude Rappaz  finishing the day with a victory over Sandra Florez in a tiebreak 6-1, 4-6, (10-7).

On the men's side, UAH would not record their first point until Nestor Perez defeated Adam Drysdale 6-3, 7-6 in singles play at the No. 3 position.

Jose Soto battled from a set down to take the second set 7-5 before eventually falling 6-1 in the third set to Nestor Vargas in singles competition.

Both teams will return to the court Friday when they host Alabama A&M at 1 p.m.
