Box Score HUNTSVILLE | The No. 3 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team completed the weekend sweep on Sunday, claiming a 7-3 victory over visiting Lee to win the third and final game of the weekend series. UAH improves to 11-2 (4-2 Gulf South Conference), while the Flames slip to 5-9 (2-4 GSC).
Tyler Harrison continued her hot streak at the plate as she collected two more hits – both of which were doubles to give the freshman four on the season. Also picking up two hits was
Kaitlyn Bannister who also drove in a pair of runs, while six other Chargers recorded a hit in the game as UAH totaled 10 while allowing Lee eight for the contest.
UAH was especially patient at the plate, drawing seven walks, and the Chargers added five more steals in the contest to own 51 on the year.
The scoring started for the Chargers in the bottom of the third when Bannister followed a Harrison two-bagger with a double of her own to put UAH ahead 1-0, and
Mallory McNeal would single later in the frame to drive home Bannister to create a 2-0 advantage for the hosts – a lead that would remain until the fifth inning.
With two outs in the top frame and a runner on base, Jennifer Giles homered to left for Lee to tie the game while also getting UAH starter
Whitney Toler out of the game. Despite not earning the victory, Toler was strong again as she tossed 4.2 innings and gave up just four hits and the two runs while striking out three.
After
Kimberly Jack (1-0) ended the Lee inning, her offense would put her in position to get the win as the Chargers scored four times in the fifth to go back in front 6-2.
Haley Thompson produced the first run of the frame with an RBI single, and an error during the play allowed another Charger run to score. Knocking in the two additional runs,
Emily Glover served one into center later in the inning to create the 6-2 score.
An unearned run in the top half of the sixth pulled Lee back to within three, but Bannister would pick up her second RBI of the afternoon in the bottom frame to make it the eventual final of 7-3.
Jack earned the win as she worked around four hits in 2.1 innings while giving up just the unearned run.
The Chargers will return to action with a pair of midweek doubleheaders, hosting Stillman at 2 p.m. on Wednesday before welcoming Tuskegee at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
