Box Score 2 PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | The ninth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team had another strong day at the 2014 Chillout, defeating St. Edward's 7-1 before turning around to knock off No. 7 Indianapolis 6-1 in the second contest of the day. The victories push UAH to a perfect 5-0 to start the season.
Proving to be a potent offensive force early in the year,
Les Stuedeman's team has scored at least six runs in all five contests.
The Chargers will conclude play at the three-day event on Sunday when they take on St. Joseph's at 1 p.m. prior to another matchup with a nationally-ranked opponent as the team will battle No. 15 North Georgia in the last game of the tournament at 3 p.m..
UAH 7, Saint Edward's 1
The scoring started for the Chargers when the team converted five hits and a St. Edward's error into four runs in the second inning.
Nicole Bobrowski put the first two runs on the board with a two-RBI single that plated
Mary Kelley and
Kaitlyn Bannister, and the team tacked on another pair of runs when
Victoria Frith singled with two outs to score
Lauren Stavinoga and
Mallory McNeal.
After a scoreless third, Frith would pick up her third RBI of the game in the fourth inning when she drove in Stavinoga who singled, stole second, and moved to third on a
Brianna Sullivan infield hit earlier in the inning. Later in the frame, UAH padded its lead when Kelley doubled into the gap in right-center to knock in
Macie Couey and Frith to make it 7-0.
The double gives Kelley four on the season, increasing her career total to 63 and placing her just two doubles away from tying
Melanie Carter's program – and Gulf South Conference – record for doubles in a career.
Whitney Toler (1-0) earned the win in the circle, tossing six innings and allowing just three hits and one run as St. Edward's would score in the bottom of the fourth. The senior struck out five on the day, and she was relieved by
Kimberly Jack who tossed a scoreless seventh inning.
Stavinoga finished the contest a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs, helping UAH outhit its opposition by an 11-4 margin.
UAH 6, Indianapolis 1
The final score of the nightcap was no indication of how the game's first four innings went as UAH had just one hit through the first four while Indianapolis had tallied two in the scoreless affair, and it was an error by the Indianapolis defense that allowed the Chargers to break through in the fifth.
Rae Edenfield led off the inning with a walk and then moved to second with one of 19 stolen bases UAH has recorded in the first five games, and she scored on an errant throw her direction when McNeal reached on a bunt to third.
After
Emily Glover (2-0) held the Greyhounds in check in the bottom of the fifth, the Chargers would score two more runs with two outs in the sixth – an inning that was extended by another Indianapolis miscue.
Tyler Harrison pulled through in the clutch, knocking a pinch-hit single into right to score Frith and Couey – both of whom had singled to start the inning – and give UAH a 3-0 lead.
Glover followed that up with a 1-2-3 inning in the circle in the sixth, setting the contest up to be blown wide open with one swing of the bat in the top of the seventh.
With one out and the bases loaded, Kelley drove it into the gap in left-center, clearing the bases to make it 7-0 as she scooted all the way into third for the team's first triple of the year.
Indianapolis then would scratch a run across in the bottom of the inning but could do no more as Glover shut down the opposition for a second consecutive day. The freshman went the distance in picking up her second collegiate win, scattering just four hits and the one run while walking none and striking out six.
UAH ended the contest with eight hits as
Macie Couey paced the team in the game with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate while scoring twice.
