Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. | The second-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team split on the road Saturday at Delta State, winning 5-4 in the day's first contest before falling 8-7 in the nightcap of the doubleheader. UAH moves to 20-5 (9-5 Gulf South Conference), while Delta State's record goes to 14-17 (7-9 GSC).
Whitney Toler (5-1) went the distance in the first game to earn the victory, scattering nine hits and giving up four runs.
Both teams scored all of their runs in the second inning with UAH striking first by putting a five spot on the board.
Emily Glover drove in the first run of the inning, while
Victoria Frith drove in a pair and
Brianna Sullivan doubled in a run later in the frame to put the Chargers ahead by the 5-0 score as the Chargers sent all nine batters to the plate in the inning.
Delta State responded, however, with four runs of its own, and it only took two swings of the bat to produce the four scores as Andrea Cutts belted a three-run homer which was followed by a solo shot by Brook Cline.
The Lady Statesmen would threaten to score again in the fourth and seventh innings, but Toler was able to prevent any further damage in earning the win.
UAH would outhit Delta State by a 10-9 margin as
Tyler Harrison,
Macie Couey and Sullivan each had a pair of hits while Frith finished 3-for-3 at the plate.
In the second game, the Chargers once again jumped out to a significant lead as the team plated three runs in the top of the first inning with Couey driving in two of the runs and
Tyler Harrison knocking in the other, but the Lady Statesmen also had a response as the hosts scored six times in the bottom of the inning to grab their first lead of the day.
Glover (6-2) started in the circle for UAH and would dramatically settle down after the first, however, retiring the next 14 batters she faced including a stretch of five consecutive strike outs, and that performance allowed UAH to scratch its way back into the game as a pair of runs driven in by pinch hitter
Rae Edenfield in the fourth made it 6-5.
The score remained that way until the seventh when the Chargers would produce a pair of runs with Glover driving in the tying run and Sullivan knocking in the go-ahead run to make it 7-6, but Delta State would score a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to claim the walk-off win.
Glover finished the contest scattering seven hits across 6.1 innings while giving up the eight runs though only five were earned. She struck out six and issued just one free pass.
The two teams will square off in the rubber match of the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
