Harrison Homers to Give No. 8 UAH a Split with UNA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE | The eighth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team earned a Saturday split with visiting North Alabama at home, bouncing back from a tough 1-0 loss in the first game to capture the second game by a 4-2 score thanks to some late-inning heroics from Tyler Harrison. The Chargers move to 24-6 (11-6 Gulf South Conference), while UNA goes to 29-9 (16-6 GSC).

With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth of the nightcap, Harrison belted her first collegiate home run as the freshman sent the ball out of the park with a shot to left-center, scoring Mary Kelley who had singled to start the inning and giving the Chargers a 4-2 lead.

Kimberly Jack (5-1) – who had entered the game in the 5th inning in relief of starter Emily Glover – then retired UNA in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory for herself and her team.

The UAH starter Glover had been strong, striking out seven and walking just one while working around seven hits and giving up just the two runs.

The scoring in the game started in the fourth when UNA struck four a pair of runs, but the Chargers immediately answered back with two of their own.

The runs came with two outs as Mary Kelley singled and stole second to start the inning before the next two UAH batters were retired. Mallory McNeal then singled up the middle to drive home Kelley, and McNeal then scored when Glover reached on an error in the next at-bat.

UAH outhit the Lions in the second game by a 10-8 margin as Kelley and Glover both recorded a pair.

In the day's first game, North Alabama scored the game's lone run in the top of the seventh of a contest that featured just a combined seven hits. Whitney Toler (5-2) took the tough-luck loss as she scattered five hits in 6.2 innings of work while surrendering just the one run.

The Chargers only recorded two hits in the contest – one from Kelley and the other from Sullivan.

The two teams will square off in the rubber match of the series tomorrow at Charger Park at 1 p.m.
