Box Score HUNTSVILLE | The No. 8 University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team captured a 5-2 victory on Sunday over visiting North Alabama to win its fifth straight Gulf South Conference series. The victory improves UAH to a mark of 25-6 (12-6 GSC), while UNA slips to 29-10 (14-7 GSC).
With Valdosta State splitting at Union on Sunday, UAH now sits just a half game back of Valdosta State for the top spot in the conference among teams eligible for the postseason, setting up a highly critical series in Valdosta next weekend.
The Chargers held an 8-7 advantage on the day in hits with two being run-scoring doubles from
Brianna Sullivan and
Haley Thompson. Sullivan's two-bagger came in the second and opened the scoring as
Mallory McNeal scored on the play, and Thompson's double was in the fifth and brought in Sullivan and
Macie Couey to give UAH a 3-0 lead.
The run support would wind up being enough for UAH starter
Emily Glover (7-2) who lasted five innings in the game and worked around five hits while giving up just one run.
That UNA tally came in the top of the sixth, and the Lions would push across an additional unearned run in the inning to pull within one at 3-2, but
Kimberly Jack entered the game and retired the first three batters she faced to preserve the UAH lead.
Providing Jack with some breathing room,
Macie Couey belted her second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-2, and
Victoria Frith produced the eventual 5-2 final when she drove in Sullivan with a single up the middle later in the inning.
Jack then worked around a one-out single and an error to earn the save.
The Chargers stole six more bases in the game Sunday, and the team now needs just three more to match the program record for steals in a season which currently stands at 124 set by the 2012 squad.
With Tuesday's scheduled doubleheader with Columbus State canceled due to weather forcing Peach Belt Conference schedule changes, the Chargers will now return to action on Friday at Albany State before the weekend series with Valdosta State.
