CLEVELAND, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's tennis teams finished a four-game road trip with a sweep over the Lee Flames on Wednesday afternoon. The 7-2 decision pushes the men's record to 4-3 on the year and 2-3 in the GSC while the women improve to 5-3 and 3-3 in conference play.
Both teams have played excellent on the road as they are a combined 7-2 away from their home court this season.
The men got off to a fast start with
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez registering their fifth-straight win as the No. 1 pairing with a 8-4 victory over Richard Gamble and Daniel Hardesty, and the Chargers took the early 2-0 lead thanks to
Fredrik Graaner and
Bruno Medeiros winning a closely contested 9-7 win against Albert Calle and Westley Lemke at No. 2 doubles.
UAH looked to go into singles competition with a 3-0 lead, however,
Pablo Herrero and
Harrison Stone fell in a tight 8-5 match at the No. 3 doubles.
The Chargers would take five of the six matches in singles play to ensure the victory with Soto picking up a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Calle as the No. 1, while Graaner continued his solid day at the No. 2 spot as the senior picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Gamble.
As the No. 3 in singles, Perez came back from a set down to capture the hard-fought victory against Gamble 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, and Medeiros captured a win over Kevin Tan 6-1, 6-2 as the No.4. In the final match of the day for the Chargers,
Harrison Stone notched a 6-3, 6-4 win to give UAH its seventh point
The Lady Chargers would sweep doubles play to take a 3-0 lead going into singles play with the tandem of
Aniek Remmerswaal and
Marleen Gort recording an 8-6 win as the No. 1 doubles against Tony McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky.
At No. 2 doubles,
Jessica Groupierre and
Katie Bryant won their sixth consecutive match in doubles play with a dominating 8-1 win over Jodie Rice and Krista Good while
Aude Rappaz and
Maria Lawton picked up a tightly contested 9-7 victory as the No. 3 pairing.
Gort kicked off singles play at the No. 1 spot with a straight-set win over McGraner and Groupierre recorded another win as the No.2 in the lineup to clinch the victory for the Lady Chargers. Lee would go on to win three matches in single play before
Lina Carvajal registered UAH's sixth point with the 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 spot.
Both squads will return to the court on Saturday afternoon when North Alabama visits Huntsville for a 1 p.m. match.
