HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team registered a 6-3 victory over North Alabama Saturday afternoon to move to 5-3 overall and 3-3 in conference play, while the women's tough 5-4 setback drops their record to 5-4 on the season and 3-4 in the GSC.
The tandem of
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez continued their strong play at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 victory over the pairing of Guillaume Dechoz and Aliaksei Kavalenka to give the Chargers the early point while
Bruno Medeiros and
Pablo Herrero recorded a tough 8-6 decision at the No. 2 spot against Max Druppel and Ben Poire .
UAH headed into singles play with a 3-0 lead after the duo of
Fredrik Graaner and
Harrison Stone picked up the critical point after being down 7-4 and facing four different match points to come back and win in thrilling fashion 9-7.
Soto would keep up his strong play with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory over Dechoz as the No. 1 in the lineup before Graaner dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 decision as the No. 2 in the lineup, and Perez convincingly defeated his counterpart 6-3, 6-0 while Herrero clinched the match for UAH as the No. 5 with the 6-2, 6-1 decision.
As the No. 6 in the lineup, Medeiros recorded the Chargers' sixth and final point of the day with the 6-4, 6-0 victory over Rob Whitsitt.
On the women's side, the Lady Chargers fell in a tough 5-4 match as four different matches would either result in a third set or a tiebreak.
Katie Bryant and
Jessica Groupierre won their seventh straight match and first of the season as the No. 1 pairing in the lineup in a 8-3 win.
UNA would take the next two doubles matches to head into singles play with a 2-1 lead after the duo of
Lina Carvajal and
Marleen Gort fell in a tight match 9-8 (6) at No. 3 doubles.
To kick off singles play, Gort fought back while being down 4-3 in the third set to win 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) as the No. 1 and give UAH its second point of the day and tie the match 2-2.
UNA would win two straight matches before
Aude Rappaz played exceptionally well at the No. 5 spot to record a 6-1, 6-3 victory, while Carvajal came back from a set down to force the third set and win 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 as the No. 6.
The Lions would clinch the final point to take the match, however, Groupierre came back from behind to force a third set but fell 7-5.
Both teams will return to the court when they head back on the road to Jefferson City, Tenn., for a 2 p.m. match against Carson-Neuman.
