Box Score ROME, Ga. | The second-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team earned a strong road series win, defeating Shorter on Sunday in the rubber match of the weekend by a 5-4 score. The Chargers improve to 17-3 (6-3 Gulf South Conference), while Shorter slips to 16-8 (8-3 GSC).
 
A five-run fourth inning for UAH and the ability to strand Shorter runners on base propelled the Chargers to the victory.
 
With UAH trailing 3-0 after Shorter was able to force across three runs in the bottom of the second, Mary Kelley would start the visiting half of the fourth off with a triple, allowing her to score when Tyler Harrison singled into left to cut the Charger deficit to two.
 
After a Mallory McNeal double and an Elizabeth Jordan walk, the bases were loaded for Victoria Frith who singled to plate Harrison and McNeal to tie the contest, and the Chargers would pack the bags again later in the frame when Macie Couey would draw a two-out walk to bring Kaitlyn Bannister to the plate who singled in two more runs to push on top at 5-3.
 
UAH pitchers then stranded a Shorter run in the bottom half of the inning, two more in the fifth, three in the sixth and an additional runner in the seventh to earn the victory.
 
The Chargers used four pitchers in the contest with Emily Glover, Kimberly Jack, Whitney Toler and Taylor Doriety all seeing time in the circle. Toler (4-1) pitched 1.2 innings of relief and earned the win, and Jack picked up her second save of the season by getting the final nine outs of the game.
 
Shorter outhit UAH by a 15-8 margin, but leaving 13 runners on base hurt the Hawks. Couey and Frith both recorded a pair of hits for the Chargers.
 
The Chargers will return to action with a mid-week doubleheader against Columbus State at 4 p.m. at Charger Park.
