MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's tennis teams closed out the regular season Wednesday afternoon, with the men registering a thrilling 4-3 victory over Division I opponent Alabama State to finish 8-5, while the women fell 4-3 in a tightly-contested match to end the regular season 7-7.
The Chargers' victory was the second win over a Division I opponent this season, previously beating Alabama A&M, and head into the GSC Tournament winning five of their previous seven matches .
Freshmen
Pablo Herrero and
Harrison Stone stepped up in a big way as UAH would come back to win the match after ASU captured a one-point lead. Stone would tie the contest in a critical third set 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 as the No. 6 in the lineup.
Herrero clinched the victory for the Chargers after facing a one-set deficit to come back and win in the third set 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 as the No. 5.
UAH started off strong thanks to the tandem of
Nestor Perez and
Jose Soto recording an 8-3 decision against Dylan Clearly and Jarred Thompson as the No. 1 pairing while the tandem of
Bruno Medeiros and
Pablo Herrero gave UAH a 2-1 lead going into singles play with a tight 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The match would remain close throughout singles play as four of the six matches went into a third set. Soto picked up an impressive tenth-straight win as the No. 1 in the lineup by defeating his counterpart 6-3, 7-6 (5) before UAH's come from behind victory after ASU claimed the next three matches.
On the women's side,
Aniek Remmerswaal and
Marleen Gort kicked things off with an 8-5 victory over Arantxia Wijingaarde and Nathalie Lorenco at No. 1 doubles despite the Hornets taking a 2-1 lead going into singles competition.
Gort and Remmerswaal both continued their solid day in singles play with Gort registering a straight-set victory over Wijingaarde at the No. 1 spot, while Remmerswaal claimed a tough 6-1, 7-6 (4) decision as the No. 3 in the lineup.
ASU would still go on to claim the match, however, picking up the three points it needed to win.
Lina Carvajal ended the Lady Chargers' day on a good note and continued her strong play in singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory as the No. 6.
Both teams will return to the court tomorrow for the GSC Tournament with the men taking on the No. 4 seed Delta State at 9 a.m., while the women will take the court at 1:30 p.m. against fourth-seeded West Alabama.
