Chargers Prepared for 2014 GSC Tournament

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville tennis teams will head to Montgomery, Ala., for the 2014 GSC Tournament as the men will play Delta State at 9 a.m. while the women will take on West Alabama at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The men and women both registered winning seasons for the second-straight year as the men's squad turned in a 7-5 overall record and a 4-4 mark in conference play to earn the No. 5 seed for the second-consecutive year.

DSU handed UAH just its second road loss of the season 6-3 on March 21.

Jose Soto, who will go into the conference tournament nationally ranked and a winner of his previous nine matches, recorded a straight-set victory as the No. 1, while Nestor Perez came back from a one-set deficit to capture the match in the final set and Harrison Stone registered the Chargers' final point of the contest.

The winner of the match will advance to the semifinals to play the No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked West Florida at 9 a.m on Friday.

On the women's side, UAH's 7-6 record and 3-4 conference record gave them the fifth seed entering the tournament and will square off against West Alabama for a second-straight year. UWA squeaked by with a 5-4 decision early in the season, however, it was just the third match of the year for the Lady Chargers.

UAH started the contest off strong when the duo of Aniek Remmerswaal and Marleen Gort registered an 8-3 victory as the No. 1 pairing while Katie Bryant and Jessica Groupierre posted a tight 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles.

UWA took control of the match in singles play, picking up four of the six possible points to record the victory. Marleen Gort defeated her counterpart in straight sets as the No. 1 in the lineup and Aude Rappaz finished the day with a victory in a tiebreak.

The winner between the Lady Chargers and Tigers will play the winner of the No. 1 and No. 8 matchup between West Florida and Christian Brothers on Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Before both teams take part in the tournament, they will end the regular season on the road against Alabama State on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
