Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. | The third-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team secured the top seed at the upcoming Gulf South Conference Championships, earning a sweep of Union with an 11-1 win in the day's first game before winning 6-2 in the nightcap. The Chargers improve to 37-7 (21-6 GSC), while Union slips to 23-24 (7-18 GSC).
UAH is now 30 games over .500 for the first time since the 2011 season when the team advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships.
Tying the GSC record for steals in a season, UAH stole seven bases in the two contests to move to 179, and the performance matches the number established by Valdosta State in the 1995 season.
For the second day in a row, UAH was led offensively by
Macie Couey who went 7-for-8 in the two games combined to increase her season batting average to .458 while also driving in four runs, and that RBI total was matched by both
Mary Kelley and
Kaitlyn Bannister who also knocked in four tallies on the afternoon.
Emily Glover (12-2) went five innings in the first contest and earned the win as she scattered four hits while striking out one and walking none. Taking home the win in the second game was
Taylor Doriety (8-2) who tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief of starter
Whitney Toler who surrendered just one earned run in 3.2 innings of work.
Kimberly Jack tossed the final two frames of the nightcap to earn her fifth save of the season.
The Chargers rolled to an 11-1 victory in the day's first game as Union did not score a run until the seventh inning, snapping what had been a streak of 14 shutout innings – 18 in GSC action – for the UAH pitching staff.
UAH outhit the Lady Bulldogs by a 15-7 margin with Couey, Bannister, and Glover all recording three hits in the contest. Bannister also drove in three runs in the game, matching Kelley who started the scoring with a three-run blast over the fence in right in the first inning.
The home run marked Kelley's team-leading sixth of the season.
In addition to her three hits, Couey also drove in a pair of runs, and
Tyler Harrison picked up the team's other RBI in the contest as UAH scored three times in the first, twice in the fourth and sixth innings, and four times in the seventh.
Union grabbed the lead in the nightcap with a solo home run in the second, but UAH immediately answered back with Harrison and Bannister both driving in runs to make it 2-1 in the third, and the Chargers would pad the advantage with a three-run fourth to go ahead 5-1.
The hosts got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth, but after a scoreless fifth and sixth innings, the Chargers tacked on an insurance run to produce the 6-2 final.
Couey scored three runs in the game, giving her a team-best six on the day.
UAH will close out the regular season next weekend when West Alabama visits for a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday at Charger Park.
