Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE | The second-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team earned its eighth doubleheader sweep of the season on Saturday, winning 4-0 and 6-2 over visiting West Alabama in Gulf South Conference play at Charger Park. UAH improves to 39-7 (23-6 GSC), while the Tigers slip to 24-23 (11-16 GSC).
The Chargers established the GSC record for steals in a season on Saturday when
Mallory McNeal stole second in the second inning of the first game, helping UAH surpass the previous mark of 179 set by Valdosta State in the 1995 season. UAH has amassed 186 thus far this year.
Picking up one of the team's seven steals on the day and driving in three runs was
Macie Couey who tripled in both contests, pushing her nation-leading total to 11 while also increasing her GSC-leading batting average to an impressive .461 on the year.
Couey's RBI total was matched by fellow senior
Mary Kelley, and
Tyler Harrison joined Couey in registering four hits in the two games combined.
UAH received strong pitching performances in both games as
Whitney Toler (9-2) earned the win in game one by tossing 6.1 innings in which she gave up just two hits and walked one before giving way to
Kimberly Jack who came on four her seventh save of the season.
In game two, freshman
Emily Glover (13-2) went the distance to pick up her team-leading 13th win of the season as she scattered four hits and surrendered just two runs while collecting her team-best eighth complete game of the year.
The scoring for the Chargers in the day's first contest started in the third inning when
Mary Kelley drove in Glover on a groundout, and UAH added to its lead in the fourth when
Brianna Sullivan legged out a single to first on which McNeal scored to make it 2-0 in favor of the hosts.
Couey then provided the team with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when she singled in
Haley Thompson and Sullivan to create the eventual 4-0 final.
UAH outhit the Tigers 9-3 in the opener with Couey, Harrison, McNeal, and Sullivan all having multi-hit performances with two each.
In the nightcap the Chargers quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Kelley – whose team-best 19-game hitting streak was snapped in the first contest – doubled to center to plate
Victoria Frith, and Harrison then drove in Kelley with a base hit to left.
West Alabama would respond, however, registering three of its four total hits in the top of the second en route to driving in two runs to knot the contest at 2-2, and the score would remain that way until the Chargers went back in front in the fourth.
Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice, driving in Glover to make it 3-2, and the lead would grow to 4-2 in the home half of the fifth when an infield single from Glover plated Kelley. Creating the 6-2 final, the Chargers tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth when Couey tripled in Sullivan and Kelley hit a sacrifice fly on which Couey scored.
The Chargers picked up 10 hits in the game compared to UWA's four, and four Chargers once again had two hits in the game as Couey, Kelley, Harrison and Glover all did so.
The team will wrap up the series – and the regular season – on Sunday at 1 p.m., and UAH's five seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to their final regular season home contest.
