HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team improved to 7-5 overall and 4-4 in GSC play with a convincing 8-1 victory over Shorter on Wednesday afternoon. The women fell to 7-6 on the year and 4-5 in conference play with the 8-1 setback.
The dominating tandem of
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez defeated Alexis Catillon and Louis Tourtois 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and the No. 3 pairing of
Fredrik Graaner and
Harrison Stone broke a 1-1 tie in the final doubles match with a 8-3 victory over Robert Watson and Cody Carr.
UAH ran away with the match in singles competition as the Chargers captured all six victories, including five matches where the decision resulted in straight-sets.
Soto, the nation's 21st-ranked player, recorded a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Marc Guerry as the No. 1 in the lineup and Perez registered a 6-1, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 spot over Tourtois.
The Chargers kept the momentum going thanks to Graaner and
Bruno Medeiros' victories as Medeiros would come back from a set down to force a tiebreaker and claim the match 6-7, 6-1, 10-9. Freshmen
Harrison Stone defeated his counterpart 6-2, 6-4 and
Pablo Herrero picked up the eighth point with the 6-2, 6-0 victory for UAH to complete the sweep in singles play.
On the women's side,
Aude Rappaz was the lone player to register a point for the Lady Chargers with a 6-4, 7-5 victory as the No. 5 player in the lineup. Shorter headed into singles competition with a 3-0 lead before
Marleen Gort displayed a valiant effort to tie her match as the No. 1 but fell 6-1, 7-5.
Jessica Groupierre was ahead by a set, however, fell in the tiebreaker before Shorter would go on to win three of the next four matches to secure the victory.
Both teams will make the short trip to Alabama A&M's campus for a 1 p.m. match with the Bulldogs.
