GSC TOURNAMENT HOME PAGEHUNTSVILLE | The second-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team will open the postseason on Thursday as the No. 1 seed at the 2014 Bojangles' Gulf South Conference Softball Championships at Heritage Park in Cullman, Alabama.
The Chargers own the top seed in the tournament for a second consecutive year.
Putting together a 23-6 campaign in conference play this season, UAH won all but one of its ten GSC series including winning its last 13 games in league action. Overall on the year, the Chargers finished the regular season at 39-7 and used that to secure a No. 2 ranking in the last regular season NFCA Top 25 poll.
The Chargers will be making the program's 19th appearance in the tournament as UAH has never missed the conference postseason, and the squad goes into the event with an overall record of 60-22 including championships in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
UAH will be aiming to snap Valdosta State's streak of five straight titles dating back to 2009.
The path to doing so starts on Thursday at 11 a.m. when UAH faces No. 8 seed Christian Brothers. The Chargers swept the season series from CBU with three wins at Charger Park at the beginning of April, and the contest will mark just the second meeting between the two programs at the tournament.
The Chargers were 9-1 winners against Christian Brothers in the opening game of the 2012 event in Southaven, Mississippi.
Christian Brothers enters the tournament with a 9-38 record – including a 2-28 mark in conference play – and the team dropped nine straight to end the regular season.
UAH and Christian Brothers will matchup against the No. 4 and 5 seeds in the second round of the tournament, facing either West Florida or Delta State. That contest will be at 1:30 p.m.
