Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. |
Mary Kelley hit another home run,
Emily Glover earned another win in the circle, and the ninth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team swept aside No. 17 Valdosta State on Sunday, winning 6-2 to take each contest of the three-game set from the Blazers. UAH improves to 30-6 (15-6 Gulf South Conference) with the triumph, and VSU slips to 31-12 (13-9 GSC).
Glover (10-2) went 4.1 innings and scattered seven hits while giving up just one run and striking out one while not walking a Blazer batter. She was relieved by
Kimberly Jack who tossed the final 2.2 innings to earn her fourth save of the season.
The pair combined to not allow VSU star Courtney Albritton record a hit in the contest as she went 0-for-4 in the contest.
After the Blazers scored in the fourth to pull within two at 3-1, Kelley pushed the momentum back to the Chargers as she led off the top of the fifth with her team-leading fifth home run of the season and the third of the weekend to put the visitors back on top by three with a 4-1 advantage.
Kelley finished the weekend driving in a total of seven runs.
The scoring for the Chargers started in the first when
Kaitlyn Bannister reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to drive in
Macie Couey, and Bannister would knock in the second run of the game in the third with a hard-hit double down the left field line to score Kelley who had walked earlier in the inning.
UAH then added to its lead when
Brianna Sullivan singled through the right side to plate McNeal in the fourth before VSU scored in the fourth to make it a two-run game at 3-1 before Kelley's homer in the fifth.
The hosts threatened to score again in the bottom frame of the fifth, placing runners at first and second with just one out before Jack entered the game and retired the next two batters, and the Chargers padded their advantage with a pair of runs in the sixth as
Victoria Frith singled in a run and then scored as she stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the VSU catcher.
Valdosta State completed the scoring in the contest with a solo homer from Heather Robinson in the sixth to create the 6-2 final.
UAH outhit the Blazers by a 10-9 clip on the day as the home team left eight runners on base in the contest.
Bannister, McNeal and Sullivan all recorded a pair of hits in the contest.
The Chargers will be off now until next weekend when Christian Brothers visits for a three-game set. There will be a fireworks display on Saturday night following the conclusion of both softball's and baseball's doubleheaders.
