UAH Forces Game Three, Falls to VSU at Super Regional

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team forced a deciding game three on Saturday afternoon at Charger Park, but Valdosta State was able to bounce back from a 9-1 UAH victory in the day's first game to win 6-3 in the final contest to win the 2014 NCAA Division II Softball South Super Regional. UAH's season concludes at 48-12, while VSU moves on with a 45-14 mark.

The day's first game was a tightly-contested affair through the first four innings as UAH scored a run in the first when Kaitlyn Bannister drove in a run, and the Blazers knotted the contest at 1-1 in the third when Courtney Albritton led off the inning with a solo homer.

The score would remain that way until the Chargers proceeded to explode offensively in the fifth inning, using six hits to score eight times in the frame as UAH sent 11 batters to the plate.

The first pair of runs in the big inning came when Macie Couey hit a two-run homer, and after Mary Kelley was hit by a pitch and stole second, she scored when Bannister singled up the middle. With Bannister still on and one out, Emily Glover hit the second two-run home run of the inning to put the Chargers in front 5-1.

The inning continued as Haley Thompson drew a two-out walk and stole second, allowing her to score when Mallory McNeal doubled in the next at-bat. Extending the frame further, Victoria Frith would be hit by a pitch, and Couey would pick up another single that would score two more runs to complete the eight-run frame.

Emily Glover then tossed the final three outs in the fifth to force the third game in the series, wrapping up a game in which she scattered five hits and allowed just the one run. She would also earn the decision in the second game, giving up four runs and eight hits in three innings to pick up the loss to finish her freshman campaign with a 15-5 record.

Valdosta State led comfortably through much of the nightcap as the Blazers jumped in front with a four-run second inning and then scored twice more in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.

Cailtyn Calhoun was masterful for the visitors in the circle, tossing a one-hitter through the first six innings.

The Chargers showed the same fight the team showed all season in the seventh, however, with Bannister leading off the frame with a homer to left center. A quick two outs were then recorded by Calhoun before Brianna Sullivan hit an inside-the-park home run down the line in left to make it 6-2, and pinch-hitter Nicole Bobrowski wrapped up her collegiate career by homering to pull the Chargers within three at 6-3.

Calhoun, however, would induce a fly out in the next at-bat to seal the contest.

Senior Macie Couey picked up three hits on the day to finish the year with an average of .471, and she scored two more runs to end the season with the UAH season record for runs with 71, after surpassing on Friday night the old mark of 68 set by Audrey Williams in 1999. Couey also owns the season triples record as she finished with 12, and with a stolen base in the first game on Saturday, she established the season record for steals with her 48th of the year.

The conclusion of the season also marks the end of the illustrious career for Kelley who finishes her time in Huntsville in the top five in numerous career statistical categories including owning the UAH doubles record with 79 – a mark that also leads the Gulf South Conference.

The weekend also saw the final contests for UAH's three other seniors – McNeal, Bobrowski, and Whitney Toler – who depart the Rocket City with two NCAA South Super Regional appearances.
