Chargers Post Second Straight Clean Sheet

Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team picked up its second win over a Sunshine State Conference team in as many games, defeating Florida Southern 1-0 on Friday night at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Florida. The Chargers improve to 2-1-0 with the victory, while Florida Southern slips to 1-1-0.

It was a score as time was winding down in the first half that provided UAH with the win, as freshman Huntsville native Daniel Buchanan recorded his first collegiate goal with just 34 seconds remaining in the period, accurately gauging where a defender's header would go and placing himself there to fire it into the back of the net.

A strong defensive effort by the Chargers would ensure that the goal would stand as UAH did not allow a single shot on goal by the Mocs en route to posting the team's second straight clean sheet. Florida Southern did fire off 10 shots compared to UAH's nine, but four of the Blue and White's attempts ended up on frame.

Michael Winstone (2-1) earned the victory in goal for UAH.

The Chargers nearly jumped in front earlier in the contest, but Leo De Smedt's shot in the 13th minute would clank off the post, leaving the game scoreless until the Buchanan score. A penalty kick was awarded to the Chargers in the 84th minute, but the Florida Southern keeper Cole Clingerman successfully stopped it. However, UAH was able to see the game out to its conclusion and earn the key in-region win.

Earning six of its total seven in the second half, Florida Southern held a 7-5 advantage in corners on the night, and the game saw a combined 23 fouls and five cautions.

UAH will return to action on Sunday in Pensacola when the team faces third-ranked Rollins. Kickoff is slated for noon.
