UAH Notches GSC Win over Delta State at Home

HUNTSVILLE | Backed by two-goal performances from Alex Petermann and Melody Dodd, the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's soccer team notched their second GSC win of the season by a score of 5-2 over Delta State at Charger Park on Sunday.

Delta State's Caroline Arrington kicked off the scoring effort on Sunday with a goal in the eighth minute to take an early 1-0 lead over UAH.

The Lady Statesmen's lead would not last long, as Petermann netted her first goal of the game in the 16th minute to tie the game at 1-all. Petermann's goal was her first of the 2014 campaign.

DSU's Tais Cotta broke the 1-all tie with a goal in the 32nd minute to put the Lady Statesmen up a score.

The Chargers were able to tie the match in the final minute of the first half on a header by Petermann for her second goal of the afternoon. Petermann's 45th minute goal was assisted by Riley Ridgeway, who played the ball in on a corner.

UAH dominated the ball in the second half, accruing three goals in the period to complete the 5-2 GSC win. A Huntsville native, Dodd scored an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute for the first Charger goal in the second half.

The Chargers would not waste time in adding to their lead as senior Marie Blunt headed in a corner from Sydney Pfankuch in the 63rd minute to make it 4-2 Chargers. Blunt's goal was her first of the season.

Dodd scored her second goal of the match, assisted by Petermann, in the 86th minute to finish off the UAH offensive output.

Overall, the Chargers posted 33 shots compared to 13 shots by the Lady Statesmen. UAH also totaled 10 corner kicks to DSU's two.

UAH will head out on the road for the next two matches beginning on Friday at Christian Brothers at 5 p.m. The Chargers will play Union on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. to round out the road swing.
