Chargers Tripped Up in Season Opener

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team opened the new campaign on Friday, dropping a 3-0 decision to Lincoln Memorial in a neutral site contest at Columbus State University. The Chargers start the year at 0-1, while LMU begins at 1-0.

The match was a scoreless affair until Lincoln Memorial's Leonardo Da Silva scored in the 61st minute to put the Railsplitters in front, and LMU's lead grew to three when Pedro Villa quickly scored twice, registering goals in the 78th and 82nd to create the 3-0 final.

The three scores were part of a 7-1 advantage LMU held in shots on goal in the day as UAH's lone attempt on frame came early in the contest off of the foot of senior Kyle Simmons, but the shot on goal differential was not due to a lack of an attacking mindset for the Chargers as UAH earned six corners in the contest compared to three for Lincoln Memorial.

Michael Winstone (0-1) recorded four saves in picking up the loss.

Six UAH players took to the pitch for the first in the Blue and White in the defeat including true freshmen Bailey Oliver – who earned the start in his first-ever collegiate game – and Daniel Buchanan, while Ian Dempsey, Rafn Haraldsson, John Imwalle, and Kristinn Kristinsson also logged their first UAH minutes.

The Chargers will look to bounce back from the setback on Sunday when they continue play at Columbus State against Eckerd out of the Sunshine State Conference. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. CDT.
