UAH Earns Region Win with 3-0 Triumph Over Eckerd

Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. | Rebounding from its season-opening setback, the University of Alabama in Huntsville men's soccer team bounced back in a big way on Sunday, picking up a key region win over Sunshine State Conference opponent Eckerd with a 3-0 decision. UAH improves to 1-1 on the season, while Eckerd slips to 1-1.

Senior Kyle Simmons scored his 34th and 35th career goals in the contest, while fellow senior Mitch Wilson produced the game-winner with an early strike that would hold up as Michael Winstone would post a clean sheet in goal for the Chargers.

Putting UAH on the board in the 20th minute was Wilson who fired a shot from just outside the box to the upper 90 where it would carom off the crossbar and in for the Blue and White's first goal of the season, and though the Chargers would outshoot the Tritons by a 9-2 margin and earn six corners in the first 45 minutes, the 1-0 score would stand through to halftime.

In fact the game remained 1-0 through much of the remainder of the contest with Winstone keeping his team in front with saves in the 69th and 76th minutes, allowing Simmons to ice the contest with his late scores.

The first strike from Simmons came in the 83rd after Leo De Smedt played a perfect ball to him along the right side of the box, allowing him to beat the keeper to the left to produce a 2-0 advantage, and the Huntsville native Simmons would make it 3-0 just over three minutes later in the 86th when he scored off a helper from Anthony Benitez.

Simmons finished the day matching his career high with six shots, and the multi-goal performance was the ninth of his terrific career.

Winstone (1-1) turned away the two shots that reached his goal to earn his second career shutout.

For the contest, UAH outshot Eckerd 15-9, and despite the large advantage in the first 45 minutes, corner kicks on the day finished even at 6-6.

The Chargers will continue play away from Huntsville next weekend when they travel to Pensacola, Florida, to face Florida Southern and nationally-ranked Rollins.
