Union Uses Free Throws to Push Past UAH

JACKSON, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team traveled to West Tennessee on Saturday and fell to second-place Union by a 76-60 score. The Chargers slip to 7-8 (4-5 Gulf South Conference) with the setback, while Union improves to 11-2 (7-2 GSC).

Four players scored in double figures for the Chargers led by Halle Jarnagin who tallied 13, and the junior recorded her first double-double of the season as she also grabbed 10 rebounds. Dina Saunders added 12, Chandler Elder scored 11, and Alysse Bishop registered 10 to round out the contingent of double-figure scorers.

The hosts held a 10-point advantage after going in front 22-12 with six minutes left in the half, but Jarnagin responded by quickly scoring five straight points capped by an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull the Chargers within five at 22-17 at the 5:12 mark.

Union, however, would go on a 15-6 run to close the half to hold a 37-23 advantage at the half after an opening 20 minutes that saw the team connect on nine 3-pointers to build up the 14-point lead.

The lead for the Lady Bulldogs would grow to as much as 17 at 49-32 with 14:13 left in the contest, but UAH would rip off a 17-5 run to narrow the gap to just five with a 54-49 score at the 4:53 mark of the contest.

Free throws would prove to be the difference though as Union outscored the Chargers 22-11 in the final minutes in part thanks to a 17-for-18 stretch from the charity stripe.

Both teams shot an identical 42.6 percent from the field for the contest, but Union hit 12 3-pointers while holding the visitors to just three long-range makes.

The GSC's leading scorer Amy Philamlee led Union with 22 points.

The Chargers will return to action on Monday when the team returns to West Tennessee for a 5 p.m. contest at Christian Brothers.
