Thrilling Comeback Produces Overtime Win at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team erased a late deficit to force overtime and ultimately defeat West Florida 77-71 on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers improve to 9-10 (6-7 Gulf South Conference), while the Argos slip to 13-4 (10-3 GSC).

The Argos entered the game tied for first in the GSC with Union.

UAH trailed by nine with just under two minutes left in the game, but a 10-1 run that included a pair of triples from Dina Saunders and a steal from both Saunders and Juanice Newton helped the Chargers knot the contest at the end of regulation.

The run was punctuated by a defensive rebound from Newton that gave the Chargers the ball with less than 45 seconds, and Loren Foster buried a contested 3-pointer near the end of the shot clock on the ensuing possession to tie the game.

UAH then scored the first four points of overtime en route to outscoring the hosts 18-12 in the extra period to secure the victory.

Foster paced the Chargers with 15, while Josi Saunders scored 10. Newton added a team-best seven rebounds.

The Chargers were strong defensively in the opening half, trailing just 30-26 to the league's leader after holding the Argos to a field goal percentage of 25.8 percent while also forcing the host to turn the ball over nine times in the half, and though UWF would improve slightly to 32.3 percent in the second period, UAH shot 40.0 percent – including 4-for-5 from 3-point land – to hang in the contest.

Finishing the contest shooting 40.4 percent were the visitors, and UWF shot 31.4 percent for the game while holding a 46-41 advantage in rebounds. The Argos used the rebounding advantage – which included 20 offensive boards – to score 18 second-chance points to overcome their shooting woes.

Toni Brewer scored 21 and grabbed 19 boards to lead West Florida.

UAH will be back in action on Thursday when the team returns home to Kelly Court at Spragins Hall for a showdown with West Georgia at 5:30 p.m. The Chargers won the previous meeting with UWG this season 69-55 in Carrollton.
