PHOTO GALLERYHUNTSVILLE | The UAH volleyball team swept North Alabama 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-23) in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Thursday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH improves to 12-3, 3-3 GSC, while UNA dips to 12-3, 6-1 GSC.
The Chargers started out strong against the Lions – who had not lost a set in GSC play entering the night – as the Blue and White held an early 7-4 advantage over UNA in the first set. North Alabama would later tie the frame at 9-9, before the Chargers went on a 5-0 run followed by a 4-0 rally to take an 18-10 advantage. The Lions brought the match within two at 23-21 before UAH scored back-to-back points to earn the 25-21 win in the first set. Junior
Rachel Brugman excelled in the initial stanza as she posted four kills on a perfect hitting percentage.
The second frame was tightly contested at the outset with a 10-10 tie between the two teams, before the Chargers rallied for four consecutive points to take a 14-10 lead. UAH would hold an advantage for the rest of the frame and took a 2-0 match lead on back-to-back kills by
Haley Snyder and
Kirsten Giles to end the frame with a 25-22 score.
After the break, North Alabama – who leads the GSC in team hitting percentage – rebounded from the first two set losses to own a 17-9 lead midway through the third stanza. Undeterred, the Chargers went on a 5-0 run with
Shelby Traff serving to bring the set within three. UAH then put together another 5-0 rally a few points later to turn the tables and hold a one-point lead at 19-18.
Both sides traded points until UAH was able to score three of the final four points to win the third set 25-23 and take the match 3-0 over North Alabama.
Senior
Olivia Bauman led the Chargers attack with 10 kills, followed by Brugman with seven kills on a .545 swing rate. Freshman
Haley Hop paced the defense with 14 digs, while Giles posted a team-high 26 assists.
The Chargers will now travel to Clinton, Mississippi to take on Mississippi College on Friday at 7 p.m. to continue GSC play.
