PHOTO GALLERYHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team opened the week's slate with a convincing 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-15, 25-14) victory over visiting GSC opponent West Alabama at Spragins Hall on Tuesday night. UAH improves to 16-8 (7-5 GSC), while UWA dips to 7-15 (5-7 GSC).
The Chargers had early success against the Tigers on Tuesday evening, taking an initial 1-0 lead over UWA with a 25-18 win in the opening set. UAH had a key 10-0 run during the stanza with
Haley Hop serving that enabled the quick advantage over West Alabama.
Sophomore
Anna Claire Johnson led the attack with six kills, while
Rachel Brugman and
Haley Snyder added four successful swings each during the set.
West Alabama would even the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 victory in the second set, with the visitors scoring five key consecutive points late to tie the contest. However, the Chargers bounced back to convincingly win the third, 25-15, as the Blue and White swung a .343 hitting percentage compared to UWA's .026.
UAH continued its success over West Alabama in the fourth frame winning by the largest margin of the evening with a 25-14 win in the stanza. The Chargers opened the match on an 8-1 run en route to the set victory for the 3-1 win.
Johnson paced the Chargers with a game-high 15 kills, followed by freshman
Anna LeDuc with 11 successful swings. Hop led the defense with 17 kills, while
Kirsten Giles registered a team-best 41 assists.
The Chargers look ahead to three matches this weekend, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at Shorter before wrapping up the weekend on Saturday with a pair of contests in Cleveland, Tennessee against Lee at noon and Trevecca Nazarene at 2 p.m.
