LIVINGSTON, Ala. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team defeated West Alabama 3-2 (21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13) in a Gulf South Conference matchup on Tuesday evening. UAH improves to 14-3 (5-3 GSC), while UWA slips to 5-10 (3-5 GSC).
West Alabama won the opening set on Tuesday evening, after holding an early 7-2 lead in the frame. The Chargers came within two points at 22-20 late in the set, before UWA won the set 25-21 on back-to-back points. Sophomore
Anna Claire Johnson paced the Chargers with five kills in the stanza.
UAH rebounded in the second frame for a convincing 25-17 victory to tie the match at 1-1. Despite UWA leading early, the Chargers took advantage of a key 7-0 run to turn the tables en route to the set win.
The Chargers took a 2-1 match lead with a tightly-contested 25-23 win in the third, as neither team led by more than four points in the stanza. A 3-0 rally late in the frame gave UAH a 21-17 advantage over UWA, which allowed the Chargers to take a match lead.
UWA started strong in the fourth set and held an early 10-5 lead over UAH, before the Blue and White capitalized on a 4-0 run to bring the set within one. However, the Tigers rallied for six straight points to take a 17-10 advantage to grasp control of the set. UAH cut UWA's lead to 20-18 later on in the set, but West Alabama scored five of the final seven points to even the match at 2-2 with a 25-20 win in the fourth.
The fifth and decisive set was another close affair with the frame tied 11-11 late. The Chargers were able to take advantage of back-to-back points for a two-point lead and went on to trade points with the Tigers until UAH completed the 15-13 win to seal the 3-2 match victory.
Johnson paced the Chargers attack on Tuesday, totaling 18 kills on a .275 hitting percentage, followed by junior
Rachel Brugman who swung .450 with 11 kills.
Alexis Deal registered a team-best and season-high 20 digs to lead a defensive core that had five total players reach double-digit dig totals.
The Chargers look ahead to a pair of GSC matches at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall this weekend, beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 19 West Florida. The following the day UAH will host Valdosta State at 2 p.m.
