VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville volleyball team lost to Valdosta State by 3-0 (18-25, 19-25, 18-25) on Friday evening in a Gulf South Conference matchup. The Chargers drop to 19-13 (10-9 GSC), while the Blazers improve to 22-5 (17-2 GSC).
UAH was led on offense by sophomore
Anna Claire Johnson with eight kills on a .217 hitting percentage, while fellow sophomore
Kirsten Giles registered a double-double and team-highs with 16 digs and 26 assists.
An early 6-0 run by Valdosta State allowed the Blazers to own an 8-2 advantage en route to the 25-18 win in the opening frame. Freshman
Haley Hop - who added 15 total digs to the UAH defensive effort Friday night - led the Blue and White with five scoops in the set.
The Chargers were able to overcome an early deficit in the second set as VSU jumped out to an 8-3 lead, tying the frame midway at 14-14. UAH remained within four for the remainder of the stanza, before the Blazers scored three of the final four points for a 25-19 win in the second.
With Giles serving to begin the third frame, the Blue and White were able to go on a 6-0 run at the outset of the stanza to maintain an early lead. However, Valdosta State vaulted the Chargers lead at 14-12 during a 3-0 rally, which is an advantage that would hold for a 25-18 victory in the third set and a 3-0 match victory.
The Chargers will wrap up the 2015 regular season tomorrow with a trip to Pensacola, Florida to take on West Florida at 2 p.m.
