PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team dropped its season opener on Saturday, falling 77-46 to visiting Southern Indiana at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. UAH starts the season at 0-1, while USI begins at 1-0.

Chandler Elder paced the Chargers offensively in the setback, scoring 12 points, and she was joined in double figures by senior
Halle Jarnagin who chipped in with 10 while also collecting four rebounds.

In the first game for the Chargers under the new rules for NCAA women's basketball, UAH played Southern Indiana close in the first quarter, trailing by just one at 18-17 after the end of the first period, but the visitors outscored the Chargers 30-10 in the second frame to grab a 48-27 lead at the half.

The Screaming Eagles – who were led by Kendyl Dearing's 22 points – shot a strong 86.7 percent in the second quarter en route to finishing the day shooting 57.4 percent, making 31 of their 54 attempts.

UAH ended the afternoon connecting on 31.8 percent of its attempts.

With Hannah Wascher collecting nine rebounds – including five on the offensive end – Southern Indiana outrebounded the Chargers 33-17 in the game.

The Chargers will look to bounce back on Wednesday evening when the team continues its four-game homestand to open the season by welcoming Hiwassee to Spragins Hall. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
