HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team cruised to a win on Wednesday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall, knocking off Hiwassee College by a 88-32 score. The Chargers improve to 1-1 on the season with the victory, while the visiting Tigers drop to 1-4.

Eleven Chargers scored in the contest, led by a trio of players who scored in double figures as Halle Jarnagin led the way with 14, Dina Saunders scored 13, and Allie Bolton came off the bench to chip in with 12. Jarnagin helped the hosts have 28 assists on their 35 successful field goals as she paced the team with five, and Chandler Elder and Sara Jarnagin both added four helpers on the night.

Leading the team on the glass, Elder grabbed eight rebounds as the Chargers outrebounded Hiwassee by a 52-36 margin.

UAH opened up a 25-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, and after leading by as many as 25 points in the second, the Chargers held a 39-18 advantage at the halftime break.

Fine defensive performances were to be had in the third and fourth quarters as UAH limited the Tigers to just six points in the third and eight in the fourth en route to the 56-point victory.

For the night, the Chargers shot 51.5 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc, while the terrific defensive effort limited Hiwassee to a shooting mark of just 15.5 percent overall and a 1-for-19 showing from 3-point land.

In addition to shooting the ball well from the perimeter, UAH was also strong inside, outscoring the Tigers by a 44-10 clip inside the pant.

The Chargers will return to action on Friday when Tuskegee visits for a 7 p.m. tilt at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
