HUNTSVILLE | Capping off a perfect weekend, the 12th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team knocked off visiting Trevecca Nazarene 85-78 on Saturday evening at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers go to 3-1 on the season with the victory, while TNU slips to 1-4.
Â
Leading the way once again for the Chargers was senior
Greg Gardner who took over the team lead in scoring as he was 7-for-10 from the field – including three from beyond the arc – en route to scoring 21. The point guard turned in a strong overall performance, grabbing seven rebounds while also dishing out five assists and not turning the ball over.
Â
Three others scored in double figures for the Chargers with
Seab Webster adding 19 and a team-high eight boards, while
Troy Saxton matched Gardner's five assists and no turnovers performance while scoring 13. Reaching double figures for the first time this season and rounding out UAH's leading scorers was
Justin Ward who added 10.
Â
A 10-0 run over the span of just over three minutes late in the first half that featured five points from both Gardner and Ward helped the Chargers push out to a 12-point advantage at 35-23 with just under three minutes left in the opening stanza, but the visitors answered with a string of nine straight points to cut their deficit to just 35-32 by the half.
Â
After the gap was narrowed to just one at 41-40 by the 17:17 mark of the second half, UAH responded by going 8-for-8 from the field in a five-minute stretch that allowed the home team's lead to balloon back to 12, and the Chargers would lead by as many as 16 points before TNU pulled back within single digits but no closer than six down the stretch.
Â
For the contest, UAH shot 55.8 percent from the field and 9-for-18 from beyond the arc, while the Trojans connected on 43.1 percent of their attempts with Byron Sanford scoring a team-best 25 points.
Â
The Chargers had a season-best rebounding margin of 13, pulling down 41 rebounds compared to 28 for TNU, and UAH also continued again its strong inside play, outscoring the Trojans in the paint by a 38-20 clip.
Â
UAH committed a season-low 13 fouls.
Â
When the Chargers return to the hardwood, it will be for a rematch with Saturday's opponent as the Trojans will welcome UAH to Nashville on Nov. 30. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
