NASHVILLE | The 19th-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team was upset on the road on Monday night, dropping its final non-conference game of the season 81-76 to host Trevecca Nazarene. UAH slips to 3-2 on the year, while TNU improves to 2-5.
Â
Kip Owens scored a career-high 20 points in the setback, going 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Three others joined him in double figures as
Brandon Roberts scored 14, while
Troy Saxton and
Preston Herring both added 10.
Â
Herring was strong on the glass in the game, grabbing a season-best 16 rebounds to help UAH own a 52-35 advantage in rebounding.
Â
The hosts – led by Byron Sanford's 21 points and seven assists – built up a 43-33 lead by the half and led by as many as 13 early in the second half, but a block by Owens followed up by one of his four treys on the ensuing possession completely erased the deficit and put the Chargers up 70-67 with just under five minutes left in the game.
Â
The Trojans responded, however, by scoring 12 of the next 14 points en route to closing the game on a 14-6 run to secure the victory.
Â
For the contest, TNU outshot UAH by a 46.3 percent to 40.6 percent margin, and the Trojans hit 12 3-pointers while limiting the visitors to a 7-for-23 showing from beyond the arc.
Â
Neither team was strong at the free throw line, as TNU was 7-for-14 and UAH was 13-for-21.
Â
The Chargers will have a quick chance to rebound when they next travel to West Florida on Wednesday to open up conference play, and the tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Pensacola.
