UAH Defeats UWA with Another 3-Point Barrage

HIGHLIGHTS | PHOTOS
HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville used its strong long-range attack to pick up another Gulf South Conference victory, knocking off visiting West Alabama 72-63 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Thursday night. The Chargers improve to 5-2 (2-1 GSC) on the season, while UWA slips to 4-3 (1-2 GSC).

UAH hit 12 3-pointers on the night, and Dina Saunders knocked down three of them to score a team-best 21 points in the victory.

Joining Saunders in double figures were Halle Jarnagin and Josi Saunders who scored 14 and 12, respectively.

UWA led by as many as nine points in the second quarter, holding a 28-19 lead at the 6:55 mark of the stanza, but the Chargers proceeded to close out the half in fine fashion, ripping off a 20-7 run during which Dina Saunders scored 11 of her points and the hosts hit five of their 3-pointers en route to taking a 39-35 lead into the locker room at the break.

Just seconds into the fourth quarter, UWA would narrow the gap down to just two at 54-52 after scoring 10 straight points, but the Chargers would not allow the Tigers to come any closer by outscoring UWA 18-11 the rest of the way to wrap up the victory.

West Alabama – led by Ariel Wilson's 19 – outshot the Chargers on the night by a 45.8 percent to 43.8 percent margin, but it was UAH's 12 3s compared to UWA's six that was a significant difference in the contest.

The Chargers also held a wide advantage on the glass, grabbing 40 rebounds while the Tigers were only able to snag 28, and with 14 of UAH's boards being on the offensive end, the home team held a strong 16-2 margin in second-chance points.

Halle Jarnagin collected a team-high eight rebounds.

After turning the ball over a combined 38 times during last week's road trip, the Chargers gave it away a season-low 10 times on Thursday night, and with Josi Saunders leading the way with five, UAH totaled 19 assists in the triumph.

The Chargers will return to the hardwood on Saturday when West Georgia visits, and the tip is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall.
