PHOTOSHUNTSVILLE | Bouncing back from its setback on Thursday night, The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team earned a 94-84 win over visiting West Georgia on Saturday afternoon. UAH improves to 6-3 (3-1 GSC), while UWG falls to 5-4 (2-2 GSC).
Â
Four Chargers scored in double figures with freshman
Tanner Finley and senior
Preston Herring leading the way as both scored 17. Herring did not miss an attempt from the field, going 5-for-5 while also grabbing seven rebounds, and Finley hit three 3-pointers and added an electrifying dunk en route to recording a season-high in scoring.
Â
Greg Gardner joined that pair in double figures as he turned in a strong overall performance of 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks, while
Troy Saxton rounded out the double-figure scorers with 12. The Chargers dominated for much of the contest, closing out the first half on a 26-11 run to hold a 46-27 advantage at the half, and the team then built up as much as a 22-point lead in the second half as the hosts would never trail.
Â
West Georgia would pull to as close as six in the final minute of play, but UAH was a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe in the closing moments to seal the victory.
Â
For the contest, UAH shot 47.2 percent from the field while holding West Georgia to a 40.3 percent mark and a scoring output that was well below the team's average of 97.0 points per game.
Â
Steph Branch led the Wolves with 23 points and a team-best eight rebounds that helped UWG hold a 41-37 edge on the glass.
Â
UAH will look to build upon Saturday's win when the team returns to the hardwood on Thursday as Shorter visits the Rocket City. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Spragins Hall.
