Chargers Tripped Up By Shorter on Thursday

PHOTOS | HIGHLIGHTS
HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team dropped its Thursday evening contest to visiting Shorter, falling 60-47 at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall. The Chargers drop to 6-3 (3-2 Gulf South Conference) on the season, while the Hawks improve to 6-2 (3-2 GSC).

Freshman Baylee Johnson was the lone player for the hosts to score in double figures as she hit three 3-pointers en route to scoring 14 points. Leading UAH on the glass were Dina Saunders and Caroline Dodd who both grabbed six, and Josi Saunders added a pair of blocks.

Shorter led throughout the contest, holding a 21-12 advantage after the first quarter, and though UAH would outscore the visitors in the second frame, the Hawks maintained a 34-28 lead going into the locker room at the break.

UAH would be unable to narrow the gap any closer than six in the third and fourth quarters as Shorter held a double-digit lead that was at one point as big as 16 points down the stretch.

Taylor Adams led the Hawks as she scored 15, while Shaundricka Mann scored 12 and had a game-high eight rebounds.

UAH's defensive effort was strong in the contest as it limited Shorter to a shooting performance of just 34.6 percent, but the Chargers also struggled from the field, connecting on 34.0 percent of their attempts while going only 4-for-17 from beyond the arc.

On the glass, it was UAH who held the advantage, grabbing 39 rebounds to Shorter's 35.

Shorter forced the Chargers into 22 turnovers and converted them into 21 points, and the Hawks edged out UAH in second-chance points by a 7-4 margin.

UAH will look to bounce back from the setback on Saturday when the team welcomes Lee to the Rocket City. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on the UAH campus.
