VALDOSTA, Ga. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team wrapped up its first Gulf South Conference road swing of the season on Saturday, dropping a 62-53 decision to host Valdosta State. UAH slips to 4-2 (1-1 GSC) with the setback, while VSU moves to 6-1 (2-0 GSC).
Â
The loss snapped what had been a four-game winning streak for the Chargers.
Â
Josi Saunders scored 16 points in the second half to finish the afternoon with a team-best 18 points, leading a trio of double-figure scorers for UAH that included
Chandler Elder who poured in 16 and
Halle Jarnagin who added 14.
Â
Saunders was also strong on the glass as she led all players in the game with eight rebounds.
Â
For much of the game, it was a back-and-forth battle as there were 13 lead changes and eight ties, and it was the Lady Blazers who held a slim 25-22 advantage at the halftime break after the opening quarters saw both teams play strong defense with both sides shooting under 40 percent.
Â
The hosts, however, built up a seven-point lead at the 2:06 mark of the third quarter, and then after a
Loren Foster triple cut it back down to a four-point game at 39-35, VSU held the Chargers scoreless for more than five minutes to go ahead 45-35.
Â
The Lady Blazers then would lead by as many as 14 points on the way to the victory.
Â
For the contest, UAH outshot VSU by a 37.8 percent to 36.5 percent margin, but the Lady Blazers outscored the opposition in several key categories including a 28-0 advantage in bench points, and a 15-5 edge off offensive boards.
Â
The Chargers did win the battle on the glass, grabbing 32 rebounds to 31 for Valdosta State.
Â
UAH will now return home for its second four-game homestand of the year, welcoming West Alabama to Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Thursday as GSC play continues. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
