HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team opened the Gulf South Conference schedule with a 5-2 win on Friday afternoon over visiting West Georgia at Charger Park. UAH is now 5-0 (1-0 GSC) on the year, while UWG slips to 6-2 (0-1 GSC).
Senior
Daniel Koger made the start for the Chargers in the series opener, hurling 6.2 innings with two earned runs allowed, one walk and four strikeouts. The southpaw improves to 2-0 this season.
Cody Burton gave his starting pitcher some immediate help following a scoreless top of the first by Koger, as Burton sent a solo homer – his first of the year – to right field giving UAH a 1-0 lead through one full.
UAH added another on a home run in the bottom of the third off the bat of senior
Chandler Brock to make it 2-0 Chargers. West Georgia was able to tag Koger for a pair in the sixth to tie it, but Brock struck yet again in the bottom half hitting a solo blast to left to put UAH back ahead 3-2.
The Chargers rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the seventh thanks to RBI singles from
Tanner Cimo and Burton which brought the game to its final score of 5-2.
Luke Mould finished off the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, giving him his first save of the new season.
UAH and UWG will matchup for a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at Charger Park to finalize the three-game series.
