HUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's tennis teams earned their first wins of the 2015 season with a sweep over the Carson-Newman Eagles at home on Saturday. The 6-3 decision for the women and 5-4 final for the men brings both squads to 1-1 on the season.
The men took an early 1-0 lead in doubles play with a commanding 8-2 win by No. 1 tandem
Jose Soto and
Nestor Perez over Stefano Daza and Garret Duron. The Eagles, however, countered with consecutive victories over No. 2 and 3 doubles. Pairings of
Ian Wisener and
Brodie Holmes, and
Pablo Herrero and
Elliot Hopson were defeated 8-5 and 8-6 respectfully.
Heading into singles play down 2-1, the Chargers took four of six matches to ensure victory including Soto's win over Juan Perez (6-1, 6-0) in the No. 1 spot and No. 2 Perez's 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Joao Pedro Oliveira.
While UAH was not able to pick up wins on courts three and four, Hopson defeated Garret Duron (6-3, 6-1) and
Harrison Stone pulled out a closely contested match (6-4, 7-5) over Austin Mackay to give the Chargers their fifth and final point.
The women's team got off to a hot start with wins from No. 1 and 2 doubles. Both pairings consisting of
Aniek Remmerswaal and
Marleen Gort, and
Katie Bryant and
Cristina Cabanas defeated their counterparts 8-2.
The Chargers were not able to make it into singles play with a 3-0 lead as
Marta Briega and
Abby Burks fell to Patricia Guerreiro and Jennifer Ott in a tight match 8-6.
The women's squad also took care of business in singles play, winning four of its six matches.
After a tough loss in the season opener, Gort was able to pick up her first singles victory on the year with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mallory Jackson. Cabanas was also victorious, winning 6-4 and 6-2, picking up her second win in as many matches during her career at UAH. At No. 4, Briega was able to clinch the Charger victory with 7-6, 6-1 win over Ledington.
Both men's and women's teams return to action Sunday for their GSC opener versus Christian Brothers at noon and 1 p.m.
