HIGHLIGHTSHUNTSVILLE | The University of Alabama in Huntsville took No. 23 Union down to the wire at Kelly Court at Spragins Hall on Saturday afternoon, despite dropping the Gulf South Conference matchup by a final score of 64-62. UAH slips to 11-16 (8-13 GSC), while UU improves to 22-3 (18-3 GSC).
Halle Jarnagin posted 20 points to lead the Chargers offensively and shot 50 percent (7-for-14) from the field. The junior also pulled down seven boards and had one block in her 26 minutes on the court.
Union's offense came out in full force at the outset of the first period as the Bulldogs held a 14-6 lead at the midway point of the half. UAH bounced back going on a 9-1 run to take a 20-18 advantage with five minutes to go until the break. However, Union battled to regain the lead and went into halftime with a 33-20 advantage.
For the first half of the second 20 minutes, Union continued to own at least a 10-point lead, but UAH continued to battle trailing by just two with five minutes to play in regulation. UAH was able to tie the contest at 62-62 with two minutes to spare after Jarnagin completed a three-point play, but a foul at the final second put Union's Amy Philamlee - who led all scorers with 33 points - to the line, where she sank both free throws to give her squad the 64-62 final.
Overall on the afternoon, UAH shot 36.1 percent from the floor, with a 48.3 percent mark in the second half.
Josi Saunders played a game-high 37 minutes, while recording 16 points, eight rebounds and one steal. Senior
Juanice Newton topped the defense with three steals.
The Chargers look ahead to the regular season finale at rival North Alabama next Saturday. Tip-off slated for 1 p.m. in Florence.
