No. 4 UAH Drops Series Finale at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. | The No. 4 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team lost to West Florida by a score of 4-2 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game, Gulf South Conference series. UAH is now 14-2-1 (10-2-1 GSC), while UWF slips to 15-9 (9-6 GSC).

The Chargers were up early in the contest after a bases-loaded, RBI single by senior Chandler Brock in the top of the third inning to drive in Jordan Shusteric from third.

UAH benefitted from early success by starting pitcher Tyler Howell (1-2), who held the Argos scoreless through the first four frames. He went on to finish the game with 4.1 innings and three runs allowed – one earned – to go with two strikeouts and zero walks.

However after the Chargers added a run on a Ryan Barnes RBI single up the middle in the top of the fifth, West Florida was able to get to Howell with a three-run rally in the bottom half to take a 3-2 advantage.

UWF went on to add an insurance run in the seventh inning to bring the game to its final score of 4-2. Reliever Dalton Goss was tagged with the fourth run scored by the Argos, finishing the finale with 2.0 innings pitched, three hits and one strikeout.

The Chargers banged out 12 hits on the afternoon, with four different players recording multi-hit games. Cody Burton led the way with a 3-for-5 performance with a run scored, while Trey Mathis, Barnes and Brock finished with two hits apiece.

UAH looks ahead to five home games in the coming week, beginning with midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday against Tuskegee and Trevecca Nazarene, respectively. Delta State will then come to town on Saturday and Sunday for a three-game GSC series.
