HUNTSVILLE | The No. 4 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team topped Tuskegee on Tuesday afternoon at Charger Park by a final score of 8-1 in the first non-conference midweek matchup of the week. UAH improves to 15-2-1, while Tuskegee slips to 6-11.
Freshman
Heath McRae made the start on the mound for the Chargers, turning in 5.2 innings pitched with two hits, one earned run and five strikeouts. McRae improves to 1-0 and gets his first collegiate win.
UAH went ahead early in the bottom of the third as
Zach Dugas ripped a single to center to plate
Trey Mathis for the first run of the game and to give UAH a 1-0 lead.
Senior
Chandler Brock spotted UAH with a two-run triple to deep right-center field in the bottom of the third inning, scoring both
Cody Burton and
Tanner Cimo. Brock went on to score in the frame on a groundout by
Ryan Barnes to give UAH a 4-0 advantage.
Tuskegee broke into the UAH lead in the sixth inning with one run, but the Chargers bounced back for a run of their own in the bottom half on a Barnes RBI double to right. The Blue and White added three runs in the seventh to bring the game to its final score of 8-1.
Head coach
Hunter Royer received strong outings from top to bottom in his bullpen on Tuesday, thanks to a combined 3.1 scoreless innings by
Logan Crook,
Charlie Weaver and
Brent Elder.
Overall, UAH banged out 14 hits, thanks two-hit performances by five different Chargers. Brock led UAH with three RBI, followed by Burton and Barnes with two runs driven in.
The Chargers look ahead to a Wednesday matchup against the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans at Charger Park. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
