PULASKI, Tenn. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team was defeated by Martin Methodist 5-4 on Tuesday. After a 16 day break between matches due to weather cancellations, the Chargers drop to 2-3 overall on the season, while the Red Hawks improve to 7-6.
Martin Methodist was able to take control early, taking two out of three in doubles play.
Pablo Herrero and
Ian Wisener fell 8-0 at position No. 1, while
Nestor Perez and
Harrison Stone suffered an 8-4 setback at position No. 1.
Jose Soto and
Elliot Hopson, however, were able to pick up an 8-6 victory over Salomon Persson and Daniel Emirzian at doubles No. 2, giving UAH its first point of the day.
In singles play, the Chargers broke even with the Red Hawks, falling just short in a couple of tightly contested matches. Soto led the way with his sixteenth straight singles victory, dropping Ramiro Vargas 6-1, 6-2. Perez and Stone were also able to pick up points defeating Persson (6-1, 6-3) and Farith Lozano (6-2, 6-1). Hopson was able to force a third match at position No. 4, but ultimately unsuccessful in grabbing the last point necessary to pull out a win for the Chargers, falling to Nico Galleguillo 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
The men's team will be back in action alongside the women at home on Saturday when they take on conference-foe Valdosta State. The matches are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
