PENSACOLA, Fla. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's tennis team split its two matches on Friday with a win over Florida Southern and a loss to No. 2 West Florida. The women's squad fell in both matches, bringing them to 6-6 overall and 3-2 in GSC play. The men improved to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference.
The men's side got off to a hot start in its morning doubles matches versus Florida Southern, taking two out of three. Tandems of
Jose Soto and
Elliot Hopson, and
Nestor Perez and
Harrison Stone defeated Charles Garneau and Brian Slivonik, and Arthur Viallaneix and Derek Bell 8-5 each.
No. 46
Jose Soto parlayed his doubles success into his twentieth straight singles victory, defeating Fabian Lundberg 6-4, 6-1.
Pablo Herrero, Hopson, and Perez also picked up points, clinching a 6-3 victory for the Chargers. The Mocs fall to 3-14 overall on the season.
The women's squad was not as successful in their morning match versus the Mocs, picking up their only point in doubles play. The duo of
Marta Briega and
Abby Burks defeated Cassie Eldridge and Katie Stanford in a tightly contested match 9-8.
In singles play,
Marleen Gort participated in the most highly contested match, falling to No. 36 Magda Riutort 6-3, 7-5. Florida Southern swept the remaining matches, winning 5-1, improving to 3-10 in 2015.
The afternoon matches versus West Florida, moved from Thursday due to inclement weather, faced several unfinished and unplayed matches due to rain and court availability. Florida Southern and West Florida also played two opponents each on Friday.
On the men's side, Soto and Perez picked up UAH's lone point in double's play defeating Alex Payrot and Kenny Brasil 8-6. While singles matches at positions one, two, and three were not played, the Argonauts were able to clinch victories with wins over Hopson, Stone, and freshman
Rodrigo Palomino. The Chargers ultimately fell 5-1, bringing West Florida to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in GSC play.
The women were swept 5-0 by the Argos. Duos of Gort and
Aniek Remmerswaal, and
Katie Bryant and
Cristina Cabanas had their doubles matches called early due to weather. Gort and Remmerswaal were down 4-3 at match finish, while Bryant and Cabanas trailed 5-3. While positions one and two were cancelled in singles play, Remmerswaal forced three sets versus Giovana Patitucci, ultimately falling 6-0, 5-7 (6-4). With the win, No. 8 West Florida improves to 13-3 overall and 6-0 in GSC play.
The Chargers continue their road swing in Clinton, Miss. on April 1 versus Mississippi College. Both squads are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
