CLINTON, Miss. | The University of Alabama in Huntsville men's and women's tennis teams defeated the Choctaws of Mississippi College in sweeping fashion Wednesday afternoon. The men's 7-2 victory improves them to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in GSC play while the women's 5-4 win brings them to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in conference.
The men's team got things rolling with a three-point sweep at doubles.
Nestor Perez and
Harrison Stone led the way from position No. 3 with an 8-4 victory over Sanders Barrick and Dudley Lampton, while the pair of
Jose Soto and
Elliot Hopson joined
Pablo Herrero and
Ian Wisener by winning 8-6.
In singles play, the men continued their winning ways, headlined by Soto's 21st straight singles win over Joan Valy (6-3, 6-0). Perez, Hopson, and Stone were also victorious, ensuring the win for the Chargers.
On the women's side, UAH fell behind early in doubles play, dropping two out of three points to the Choctaws. The Chargers initial point came from position No. 2, where
Katie Bryant and
Cristina Cabanas narrowly defeated Brenna Keller and Courtney Schrock 9-8 (2).
At women's singles, UAH was able to pick up the four necessary points to win, including Bryant's clincher in the No. 6 singles match in which she defeated Katie Kema 7-6 (4), 6-4. While
Aniek Remmerswaal and Cabanas won in straight sets,
Marleen Gort pulled out a three-set victory over Sofia Gonzalez-Carrera 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at position one.
The Chargers will be back in action on the road Friday when they take on GSC rival North Alabama. The matches are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
