No. 6 UAH Takes Both Games in Doubleheader at CBU

MEMPHIS, Tenn. | The No. 6 University of Alabama in Huntsville baseball team defeated Christian Brothers in both games of Saturday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader by scores of 12-5 and 13-8  at Joe Nadicksbernd Field. UAH improves to 31-6-1 (17-6-1 GSC), while CBU dips to 9-20 (4-15 GSC)

Daniel Koger started on the mound in game one for the Chargers, turning in 5.1 innings of work with four earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts. Koger earned the win for his performance to improve his season record to 8-1.

After a scoreless first inning from both sides, the UAH offense kicked into gear with two-run frames in the second, third and fourth, highlighted by Colton Simbeck's team-leading 12th homer of the season in the fourth inning. CBU plated one run in the third to make the score 6-1 through four full.

The Chargers then erupted for a four-run rally in the fifth, including a two-RBI, pinch-hit double by Ryan Barnes, to take a commanding 10-1 advantage. Koger began to struggle in the bottom of the sixth and was tagged with three runs in the inning before giving way to Wilson Adams out of the bullpen.

Adams picked up his first save in the 2015 season, after twirling 3.2 scoreless innings with two hits allowed and a season-high six strikeouts. The right-hander allowed just one unearned run.

UAH added two more runs in the ninth on RBI base knocks by Chandler Brock and Barnes to bring the game to its final score of 12-5.

Overall in the series opener, UAH totaled 18 hits with five different players registering multi-hit performances. Reigning GSC Freshman of the Week AJ Walden paced the Chargers offense going 4-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI. Barnes had a team-high three RBI, followed by Cody Burton, Colton Simbeck, Tanner Cimo, and Brock with two RBI apiece.

Left-hander Mitchell Wright took to the hill in game two of the doubleheader, picking up the win after 5.0 scoreless innings with four hits allowed, one walk and seven strikeouts. Wright improves to 4-0 on the year.

The Chargers were first on the board yet again, with Brandon Lawing driving in Simbeck from third on a groundout. UAH followed with another run in the third on Ben Hall's third homer – a solo shot – of the season, before Simbeck launched a solo homer and Burton notched a RBI single to make it 4-0 Chargers through four full.

The Blue and White went scoreless in the fifth, but followed it up with a nine-run eruption in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 13-0. A total of nine base hits were recorded in the inning, including two triples by Michael Fox which ties a program record. Christian Brothers added eight runs in the seventh off relievers Charlie Weaver, Hunter Skipper and Logan Crook to bring the game to its 13-8 final.

UAH managed 19 total hits in game two, led by Hall who went 5-for-5 with two runs scored, two RBI, one double and a home run. Simbeck was not far behind going 4-for-5 in the nightcap with three runs, one RBI, two doubles and a homer.

The Chargers and Bucs will wrap up the three-game, GSC series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Joe Nadicksbernd Field.
